Humanity is connected like never before. In fact, recent white papers have concluded that the proverbial “six degrees of separation” is now down to four because of social networking and mobile phones. It’s not hard to imagine that the true promise of a connected…
The First App You Open In The Morning
You wake up. You grab your phone. What’s the first app you open?
This sounds like a silly question — or worse, an insulting one.1 But I find it’s a rather enlightening question. Depending on when the question is asked, the answer can either be telling about the current state of apps or the current state of you.
Personally, right now, the first app I open in the morning is Twitter. But it hasn’t always been. A year ago, that app was Path. A year before that, that app was Instagram. Before that, it was probably Twitter again. Or Foursquare. Or Techmeme (technically, the web browser). At some point it was Facebook. And way back when it was probably — shudder — email.
For me it’s Candy Crush because the game is so fucking addictive… I try not to open anything work-related until it’s time which includes twitter and gmail.
I hear what you are saying about the app as a homepage, but in my example it’s so one dimensional?
500 Words A Day
I’m doing something similar and spreading out my writing on various outlets. This is ambitious for me having not been a writer in my past but I’m really looking forward to it and the learning that will be had.
I’m not a huge believer in New Year’s resolutions (I tend to reflect more around my own birthday about the coming year). But I do like the idea of using the new year as a jumping off point for a new project. So that’s what I’m doing today, one day into 2014.
I’ve decided that I’d like to write more this year. Or, more specifically, I’d like to write more regularly this year. Last year, I wrote quite a bit, but I’d do so in large chunks of time and words and I never felt like I achieved a good cadence in my writing. So I’m switching things up.
This year, my plan is to write roughly 500 words a day in the form of a short post here on this site. Some days I’ll undoubtedly write more, some days I may write less. But 500 words seems like a reasonable amount to both write in a timely manner and for you to read in a timely manner.1
Looks like a fun opportunity…
